They had travelled for a long while.
The air was dry and the only thing that had managed to hinder their progress was the great, tall, towering mountains. For several days the two of them had wandered in tandem, often walking next to each other and only when the path was too treacherous for them to walk alongside did Epheseus lead the way.
They had a quiet understanding, and while they did not embrace like lovers, it was understood that Epheseus should be willing to sacrifice himself for the survival of his rosy coloured mate.
Eventually, though, they did stop.
They had found an area that was comfortably sheltered by the trees, the sunlight filtering through the branches in an almost delicate fashion. Pausing alongside a river in the shadows of the trees, Epheseus turns his golden head back towards Erriapus. "Is this good?" he assumed she must have been tired. She had never travelled quite like this before, and the two of them found comfort in the dampness of the group surrounding the shallow river.
Without really waiting for her reaction, the golden sea-stallion moves forwards, plunging into the water with several loud splashes.
Without words, he knew that they loved the water.
In the water, they found safety and comfort. Epheseus' smooth, hairless skin drinks in the moisture and he sighs in relief. "I don't know how anyone could live without water. You know there are skinny horses that live in the desert? They have hair like the others, but they live in the heat... No water." thoughtfully, he ducks his head, plunging it fully underwater and holding his head there for a moment before rising to the surface. Gone were the days that he and his mate could breathe underwater.
"I couldn't even imagine." he says with a little sigh.
