[†] The earth seized beneath her, tossing and rolling and bucking. Her eyes shot open and she lurched to her feet in a panic long before she could realize that what she thought was the earth trembling in a quake was really the quiver caused by hundreds of thundering hooves running nearby. She stood there, trembling as she steadied herself and her thundering heart, listening as whoever it was ran by and away into the distance. Silence fell over her like a thick blanket when they were gone and she waited a moment or two longer before deciding that it was time to move on. Quick, before they come back, she shook her head to cast the thought aside. Before who came back? Her mother? Her brother? Yes, they're out there. Always out there, searching, looking, waiting, lurking. Pah! No, they had left her, they weren't coming back for a little thing like her. Neither had really cared, after all. She'd only been an amusing toy.
[†] Golden eyes darted back and forth beneath black lashes as she moved. Cautious, wary, quiet. She crept over the land with a steady stride, somewhere between a pacing gate and a walking trot. Her proud neck arched, her black and gold mane rippling along the delicate curve of her crest as she moved. So much moving. So much traveling. Always exhausted, always ready to collapse and so hungry. She closed her eyes against the hunger inside of her, trying to smother her own discomfort. She could rest and eat at the end of the day. For now she had to get further from here. Away from those thundering hooves, the invisible strangers that had startled her awake.
[†] Perhaps if she had not been in such a hurry to get away from where she had spent the last night and paid better attention to where she was going she might not have stumbled into a claimed land. Then again she might have, anyway, and just left, or followed the border until she could find another way through the world. As it was she didn't realize she had crossed a threshold or that she was, technically, trespassing. Keeping her head down, ears twitching and eyes alive she moved through the lands until she came to a river and small, grassy meadow. No one was there, no danger, no threat, nothing. She relaxed and dipped her pink and coal muzzle into the water to drink. What had she been doing again? Oh yes, traveling. Why? She lifted her head and stared at her reflection with curious gold eyes. I don't remember, she thought to her rippling image as water dripped down to the serene river. Did she really need to be traveling? No... I suppose not... I can stop here. She smiled at herself and lifted her head to look around. It was still safe, wasn't it? Had she checked for danger earlier? She couldn't remember, so she checked again. No danger, nothing, safe.
[†] Her stomach rumbled and cramped painful with hunger and she jumped. Why was she hungry? Hadn't she eaten? Why hadn't she eaten? When had she last eaten? She couldn't remember, couldn't answer a single question. With a sigh, trying not to be disturbed by the lack of information she could give herself she dropped her head to the grass and snipped at it delicately, ears twitching and head popping up every few seconds for danger. It didn't take her long to forget to watch for danger and focus simply on grazing. White and gold flashed in a tangle of hair as her tail swirled up behind her to brush flies off her body.
